Until 1969, when a water system was built by the municipality to supply Gavalochori with water, residents used the cisterns in their own homes and water from wells in the village to supply them with water. The cisterns collected and stored rain water, and the wells drew on two underground springs that run across Gavalochori. This well was one of the closest to the village and was called O Pigados (Πήγαδος) (“The Well”). At 24 meters (26 yards) deep, it was an important source of water, especially in the summer. You can see this well on a stone platform at the start of the old road that climbs up the hill to Vamos (Βάμος) on the south side of Gavalochori.
