You will have a much better experience on Crete, of course, if you have a place to stay and some way to get around the island. A variety of housing options are available in Gavalochori, ranging from villas to houses to apartments to rooms, and they come with a variety of prices as well. Although some visitors choose not to rent a car while they are in Gavalochori, that decision severely restricts opportunities for exploring the island. You can get around via taxi, and for short trips, this is a viable option (fares are regulated by the government, and the rate is €0.74 in the day and €1.29 per kilometer at night). Bus service is also available, but buses don’t run all that frequently and take some planning to figure out. There is no train service on the island, and Uber and Lyft have yet to make an appearance.
