Located in the main square on the street that goes to the Folklore Museum is the Cultural Association Center of Gavalochori. It is a somewhat contemporary looking building painted a pale yellow with green trim on the many windows that front the street. This is the building where most of the major indoor community events of the village take place.
The building for the Cultural Association was erected between 1982 and 1986. The land was donated by the Liondaki brothers, who lived in Gavalochori, and the building was built at a cost of 2,700,000 drachmas (the equivalent of about €11,500 at the time). The construction was funded by a variety of sources: The Association of Gavalochorians of Attica contributed 200,000 drachmas, the Ministry of Culture 300,000 drachmas, and the Cultural Association 2,200,000 drachmas. The building belongs to the Cultural Association of Gavalochori.
The Cultural Association Center is the site for a variety of activities. Because it contains shelves of books donated by community members, it functions as a library for Gavalochori and is open on Thursdays between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. so that residents can read and check out books.
Every year on January 6, the new year is celebrated in the building with the cutting of the Christmas cake, vasilopita. It is also used for events as varied as elections, meetings of the Cultural Association, conferences, art exhibitions, exercise classes, and traditional dance lessons. Community members are allowed to use the space free for events with the Cultural Association’s permission. To make arrangements to host an event in the space, contact Katerina Bakatsaki at mpaklion@yahoo.com or +30 6944 89 9233.
