Name day of Saint Nicholas

Saint Nicholas is considered to be the patron saint of sailors because he calmed a stormy sea through prayer. This is why a boat is decorated on this day and why boats strung with lights are often part of Christmas decorations in Greece (villagers often decorate Christmas trees on this day as well). Religious services are celebrated the evening before and the morning of this day in the Church of the Nativity of Mary in Gavalochori.
